Plugins to Install

Below are all the plugins that are being used on the Daily Dish Pro theme demo site. They are all optional, but if you’d like to set up your site like the demo, you’ll need to install and activate them before you begin. You may substitute your favorite plugins for these, if you wish

General Plugins

Shop Plugins

The following plugins are used to add the shop functionality to theme demo. If you won’t be including a shop on your site, you don’t need to install them.
  • WooCommerce: This plugin adds an online store to your website.
  • Genesis Connect for WooCommerce: This plugin is used together with the WooCommerce plugin to make sure shop related pages are displayed correctly.

Membership Plugins

The following are paid plugins to add extra functionality to your WooCommerce shop. If you won’t be including a membership area on your site or don’t need to collect recurring payments, you don’t need to install them.
  • WooCommerce Memberships: This plugin adds a membership component to your site allowing you to restrict content to members only.
  • WooCommerce Subscriptions: This plugin allows you to create and manage products with recurring payments. This is useful if you are using the above mentioned plugin to sell memberships on your site.

Installation & Activation of Genesis and Child Theme

There are two ways to install the Genesis Theme Framework or a Genesis child theme – manually with an FTP client, or automatically through the upload feature in the WordPress dashboard. Below you will see instructions for both options. Please note that in order to use a child theme, you will also be required to have the Genesis framework installed in the wp-content/themes directory on your server.

Installing Through The WordPress Dashboard (Recommended)

  1. Log in to your WordPress dashboard and go to Appearance > Themes.
  2. Click the Add New button at the top of the page.
Installing Through The WordPress Dashboard (Recommended)
  1. To the right of the “Add Themes” heading an Upload Theme button will be visible – click the Upload Theme button.
  1. Click the Choose File button, and find the file for your theme on your computer. The file will typically be named with the name of your theme and have a ending of .zip.
  2. Once you have selected the theme file for upload click the Install Now button.

Installing With An FTP Client (Advanced)

1. Download the theme zip file to your computer, and unzip it. You will see a theme folder with the name of the theme you are installing. 2. Log in to your server through an FTP client, and navigate to the wp-content/themes directory. You will want to transfer the entire theme folder to that directory. If you are using a child theme, you will need to transfer both the genesis theme folder as well as the child theme folder to that directory.

Activating The Theme

To activate your child theme, log in to your WordPress dashboard, and go to Appearance > Themes. There you will see screenshots of the themes that are available for you to use. Hover over the theme screenshot for the theme you wish to activate, and click the Activate link in the lower right. If you wish to use a child theme, make sure you activate the child theme, and not the Genesis parent theme.

Notes

  • If you are looking for a good FTP client, you can check out CuteFTPFilezillaTransmit or Cyberduck – make sure you find one that is compatible with either a PC or a Mac, depending on which you have.
  • If the theme downloads as a folder full of files, this is a setting on your computer. You can zip it back up by right-clicking on the folder name and choosing Compress.
  • Do not rename the genesis folder. Child themes look specifically for this exact name. Any other variation will not be found by the child theme.

How To Import Demo Content

For your convenience, an export file of the Daily Dish Pro theme demo site is available to assist in the setup of your theme. This file contains the demo content for the posts, comments, and categories. This file can be found in either of these places: Learn how to use this export file in the How To Import The Demo Site Content tutorial. Note: The import file contains the demo content for the posts, comments, and categories with gray placeholder images. The images shown in the demo are not licensed for redistribution with the themes. If you wish to obtain images that are similar to what’s used in the demo to use on your site, you may check some of the stock photo sites: Photography for purchase:

If you choose a dark Accent color, the text will automatically be changed to white.
Be sure to click the Save & Publish button at the top of the customizer to preserve your changes.

Notes:
  • Images of exactly 400×80 pixels will give the best results. Other sizes will be cropped in the upload process to create an image of the correct size.
  • The header image is double the display size so it will appear crisp on a retina screen. Though the upload size is 400×80 pixels, the image will be displayed at 200×40 pixels.
  • The site header is flexible in height, so it will automatically adjust to the correct size no matter what device viewers are using.

How Do I Change…?

Now that you have your theme set up, you may wish to customize some areas, such as the footer text, the post info line, etc. The following is a list of common customizations and links to the instructions on how to accomplish each of them: Note: Unless otherwise indicated, these code snippets should be placed into your theme’s functions.php file at the very end of the file, after all the other code. Some themes already have code snippets in the functions.php file to make changes to these areas, so check the file first before adding any new code. If the code is already in the functions.php file, you should edit the existing code to make your changes. If you are uncomfortable editing code, the Genesis Simple Edits plugin can help you customize the post info, post meta, and footer credits text We also have tutorials and code snippets for other customizations you may wish to make:
